Mission Statement
Caring Cat Rescue (CCR) is a volunteer-powered non-profit organization. We are dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable cats in our surrounding community. Through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), fostering, and compassionate care for colony cats and lost pets. We work to reduce suffering and promote well-being. We collaborate with shelters, rescue groups, and the public to ensure every cat has a chance for a safe, healthy, and loved life.
*CCR is a small, volunteer-run group with limited capacity. We are not a full TNR shelter or clinic and cannot take on large-scale requests. Our role is to share resources, educate the community on meeting cats’ needs, support owners of lost pets, and connect neighbors to help cats in need.
How Caring Cat Rescue Began
The story of Caring Cat Rescue began with a very special cat named SoMir.
In November 2007, during rush hour in Charlotte, NC, a tiny 4–5-week-old kitten was struck by a car in the middle of a busy four-way highway. Traffic came to a stop so his little body could be moved off the road—everyone thought he had passed. But then he twitched. That small movement changed everything.
Shamra Andrews, the future founder and CEO of Caring Cat Rescue, knew she had to save him. She scooped him up, his back leg badly injured, and rushed him to the nearest emergency vet. When the staff asked his name, Shamra said, “Miracle. Because he’s alive.”
Miracle needed his leg amputated, and Shamra committed to paying for his care. A family member once joked that she could have bought a Sony TV with the money she was spending, and soon his nickname became a blend of the two names: SoMir.
SoMir grew up surrounded by Shamra’s other rescue cats. He was incredibly social—always wanting to be near people, sitting on the stairs like a little man, and greeting everyone with love. Over the years, his journey included moves across states, temporary homes, and even being reunited with Shamra after an urgent rescue from a foreclosed ranch. Through it all, he remained resilient, forgiving, and endlessly loving.
He had a spirit like no other. He knew words like “time to eat” and “I love you.” He would sleep with his three paws stretched in the air and was always gentle with other pets. Despite his challenges as a tripod cat, SoMir lived life joyfully, watching over Shamra as much as she watched over him.
In December 2020, SoMir’s health declined. On Christmas Day, Shamra held him in her arms as they said their final goodbye. Losing him was one of the hardest moments of her life, and his absence is still deeply felt.
But SoMir’s legacy lives on. His story, his resilience, and his love inspire everything Caring Cat Rescue does today. The organization exists because of him—because one little life, saved on a highway, became the heart and reason for helping countless others.
Caring Cat Rescue is built in SoMir’s memory. Every cat saved carries a piece of his miracle forward.
